Bobtail or 90 ???? I am thinking of getting my first landrover and want to compete in RTV's and such like off road events. I want to know which would be better to get. A bobtialed Rangrover or a Defender 90? I want to be able to fit four people in the vehicle so a 90 would have to be hard top.
Any advise on this subject would be helpful because i just dont know anything about the bobtails. Cost is a consideration aswell unfortunatly.
Thank you very much

Why do you want these modern coil springs ???
If you have to buy a motor with girly coils to compete in it would have to be a 90, so you could RTV it. Personally though RTV ing a 90 would be a doddle. Why not give yourself a challenge, and buy a proper Land Rover, i.e. one built before 1970...

thanks for your advice. The reason i want a defender or a bobtail is for the sligh-*test*-('") improved confort that it brings compared to a series. Plus to get the articulation on the series i would probably have to fit parabolic springs, which is more cost! Also unfotunatly the club i would have to join, here in loughborough where i go to uni, have a lot of jap crap vehicle which set the courses up. So as you know the series vehicle aint got the turning circle required to compete with these things, mainly due to the leaf springs!
Which leads me back to the main question wether i get a bobtail or 90. I think i'm moving more towards the 90 to be honest.
But thanks for the comments.
Brian
P.s If u love leafs so much why are you a disco driver?

Ah, this is my user name for the LROi forum as well. The thing is i did once have a buitifull Discovery, but this got written off. Due to the fact its not as strong as a series. So i keep my name as a joke.
Series vehicle will articulate with out the need for parobolic springs. They will do what a standard 90 will if driven right. Steering lock can be improved. plus when it breaks its not as dear as a 90 to fix.. But still go for a 90 instead of a bobtail. Easy to mend.
Jap Crap says it all to me..

Hmmmmmm????? Well i've never seen a series beat a standard 90 but i'll take your word for it. No disputing the comfort side though. I think ur right bout the bobtail wont be as robust as the 90 or infact a series. I think you've made my mind up for me.
Thanks for your help.
Any other input on this subject is still welcome though cus my mind could still be changed.
Cheers
Brian

You say you have not seen a swb series motor beat a 90. How many trials have you been too. Our last trial had 5 or so 90's attend, one was only 3 years old. They as well as a range rover were beaten by a series 1 80 then in second place came my 2a. Like i say a series swb is as good as any other production motor.
But go on have a 90. It will be a easy start.

Go for a ninety!!!!! And yeah series landys will beat a nintey but has more to do with the skill of the driver being able to withstand the bumps on their milk crate type seats  sorry!!

O yes. Must admit we both love the truck. I have the name Discodriver as i used to have a Disco as well. But being modern and coil sprung it didnt stand up to oncoming traffic as well as a leafer. Have you received you PM .....
You dont need to be a machanic to rebuild a Land Rover.... as long as you have a few spanners youl be ok...

And a BIG hammer and know how to swing it :P

Looks like you were right. Me and my mate managed to come first and second at the last trial using his series 2a. It was set out by a disco so the turning circle wasnt a problem and the beast just ate up the sections for breakfast. A clear for my mate and 2 for me. Still dont think i'd like to travel the hour and half journey home every other week in one though. Gonna stick with the defender.
